A cross-section ofJudicial Officers attended a week-long training of trainers on Sexual andGender Based Violence (SGBV) at the Judicial Training Institute (JTI).
The training was as a resultof partnerships between the JTI, the Police Senior Command and Staff College (PSCSC)and the Netherlands Government through NUFFIC.
The Executive Directorof JTI, Hon. Lady Justice Damalie N. Lwanga, stressed the importance ofJudicial officers appreciating the effects of SGBV on the victims because ofthe trauma it causes them.
"The victims insome cases get re-traumatized due to inappropriate or insensitive handling oftheir cases in the criminal justice system," she pointed out.
Hon. Lady JusticeLwanga called for the fast-tracking of SGBV cases through the criminal justicesystem so that victims can quickly embark on their recovery process.
She commended theNetherlands Government for funding and applauded the PSCSC for the researchthat formed the basis of the workshop.
Hon. Lady JusticeLwanga encouraged the Judicial officers to participate actively in the trainingand also share experiences to widen their knowledge and skills in handling SGBVcases.
The Regional Directorof the Regional Training Facility of the International conference of the GreatLakes Region, Mr. Nathan Byamukama said the purpose of the training was todeepen the Judicial Officers’ knowledge and skills of the participants aboutSGBV so that the necessary evidence needed in courts is properly handled andmanaged.
"And also totransform the attitudes about how those we train about the way they view theirrelationships with men, husbands, women, wives, children, girls and boys, etc.Challenging chauvinistic stereotypes and negative masculinities as we advocateto power with each other as all human beings irrespective of sex for peace,stability and development," he said.
Mr Byamukama commendedthe partnership with JTI and wished the participants fruitful deliberations.
Hon. Justice David N.Batema took the participants through an understanding of Gender and its keyconcepts, gender and power where he observed that men use violence againstwomen to maintain power imbalances in society.
The training will befacilitated by Justices; Hon. Justice Eldad Mwangusya, Hon. Lady Justice SusanOkalany, Hon. Justice Duncan Gaswaga, Hon. Lady Justice Eva Luswata and Hon.Lady Justice Linda Tumusiime. The others are Commissioner of Police, Dr JohnKamya, Assistant Director of Public Prosecution, Ms. Samali Wakoli, SP RoseNalubega, ASP Serunjoji and Sgt. Okello.
The consultant ofICGLR- RFT, Ms. Dora Byamukama, was also in attendance.
